Abby Gibson was a caring 10-year old little girl that brought joy into every life she touched. She loved her family and friends, including her animal friends. She was a happy child who tried to squeeze everything she could into each day. Abby loved to laugh, forever making funny faces and doing silly things to make the people around her laugh. Abby passed away on June 3, 2010 from injuries she sustained in a horseback riding accident.
Abby loved all animals, especially horses. She started taking weekly riding lessons at Cedar Valley Farm when she was 5 years old. It quickly became her second home. Her favorite times were the week long riding camps each summer. Along with the Cedar Valley horses, Abby also loved taking care of her four cats and her neighbor’s dog, Tyson. She considered him as one of her best friends. Abby loved animals and was passionate about helping them. She was constantly telling her friends and family of her plans to attend UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine so that she could become a veterinarian and take care of her animal friends.
To embrace Abby’s dream, we established the Abby Gibson Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Endowment at UTCVM. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a UTCVM student who graduated from an East Tennessee high school. The student selected must be passionate about helping animals and demonstrate a history of his or her commitment to the veterinary profession through volunteer hours. He or she must also plan to specialize in small, large, or mixed animal practice.
Our goal is that the Abby Gibson Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Endowment will help others achieve their dreams while remembering Abby. Our plans to accomplish this goal include events such as the Walk and Wag Dog Walk and private gifts.
This year the family and friends of Abby Gibson are organizing the 2nd Annual Walk & Wag Dog Walk with 100% of the proceeds going to the Abby Gibson Veterinary Scholarship Endowment at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. The 2013 Walk & Wag Dog Walk will be held in the beautiful and dog-friendly Victor Ashe Park on Saturday, June 1, 2013. After the one-mile dog walk, registrants will have the opportunity to participate in contests, get creative with their dog at the Paw Prints art area, interact with sponsors, pet-related vendors, and local animal rescue groups and their adoptable dogs, plus much more. It will be a fun-filled event for dogs and their families!
Our goal for the Walk & Wag Dog Walk is to raise additional funds for Abby’s scholarship endowment while bringing together animal lovers throughout the community in her memory. We would like to thank you for your participation in the Walk & Wag Dog Walk!
